Quick Thoughts & Things I Noticed

Fast-tracked by the coronavirus crisis, Berlin has been installing (notionally) temporary bike lanes. Lots of them. And real ones, wide enough for a couple of bikes and on the street, but separated with physical dividers. It’s like the city is reborn: You can now bike around town without constantly fighting for your life.

It’s a real game changer.

This, combined with the already excellent bike paths in Berlin’s environs — many part of trans-European bike path networks — this summer turns out to be an excellent summer for biking.

What a time to be alive: The German army is running trials (ZEIT, article in German) to see if dogs could sniff out coronavirus infections.

Berlin’s infection numbers are slowing down once more. I see large groups blatantly breaking social distancing rules day in, day out. And I gotta admit: I have some trouble figuring out how to react, how to deal with this: More often than usual I’m experiencing how it is when the careless behavior of other groups has a direct impact on my own freedom. (Speak of privilege! I’m well aware this is how many vulnerable groups must feel all the time.)

Here’s a bunch of people ignoring all laws and societal responsibilities, and on the other side of the scale everyone in our household will be confined to our 4 walls working from home while also caring for a child 24/7. It’s a glaringly visible direct causality, and it’s killing me a little.

So yeah, that’s a tangle of thoughts I’ve been struggling with and am unsure how to resolve without getting bitter about it.

The apparently only publicly available recording of Hamilton just premiered on Disney+, a mere 5 years after the musical hit Broadway. And it’s still totally great.
